Making your own edibles can be a quick and effective way of taking your medication. There are, however, a few things that you should be aware of before using this method

1. You will start to feel the effects much later while using an edibles compared to that of smoking or using a vaporizer. The amount of time it takes can vary depending on the patient, but generally, it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours. This is because your body must digest and metabolize. It is important to wait until you feel the effects before taking multiple edibles.

2. Edibles last much longer than the traditional methods of smoking or vaping. Again the length varies depending on the specific patient, but generally it will last twice as long as smoking or vaping.

3. Edibles require more marijuana proportional to make. Patients who use edibles usually require a larger prescription because you will use more marijuana to make the edibles. This also means that edibles tend to be much more potent than traditional means.

Please be cautious with edibles until you gain more experience. While they are a great method of relief they do require getting used to.

Here are some of the common recipes for making edibles. Enjoy!

 Marijuana Butter (Cannabutter) :

Step 1: Decarboxylate your marijuana. Heat on evenly spread baking sheet at 240 F for 40 minutes.

Step 2: Boil water in saucepan. Enough so that your marijuana floats about 1.5 inches aboce the bottom of the pan.

Step 3: Place butter in pan. 1 stick of butter per 1/4 oz of marijuana. Let melt completely.

Step 4: Add marijuana and turn down heat to low. Simmer for 3 hours. Top of the mix will be glossy and thick when done.

Step 5: Prepare container for end product. Place double layer of cheesecloth over container and strain marijuana. Squeeze cheesecloth to get all of the butter

Step 6: Let cool for 1 hour. Place in fridge until separated and solid.

Step 7: Separate butter from cooking water. The butter is ready.

Tinctures:

Tinctures are a fairly popular method for the use of medical marijuana. There are a number of different ways to make a tincture that will be outlined below. Again, please ease yourself in to the use of tinctures as dosage varies depending on the preferences of each patient.

Equipment Required: High proof alcohol (Everclear), Cheesecloth, Jar, Oven, Baking Sheet, Dropper Bottle.

Long Term Tincture:

Step 1: Grind your flower finely and spread evenly on baking sheet. Place in oven at 240 F for 40 minutes. (Decarboxylation)

Step 2: Place marijuana in jar, and pour alcohol in to jar just enough so that it covers the flower.

Step 3: Seal tightly and gently stir the contents of the jar.

Step 4: Store jar somewhere dark and room temperature for 2 weeks. Agitate the contents of the jar once or twice a week to get an even spread.

  • The length of time that your marijuana sits in the alcohol, the more potent it will become. Recipes vary in length, from 3 hours to 3 weeks. This is largely up to personal preference. That being said, the longer it sits the less palatable it will become. Many people mix in honey with the tincture to make it more appealing.

Step 5: Strain contents through cheesecloth making sure to squeeze cheesecloth to fully extract tincture.

Step 6: Continue to store in dark/amber jar. The tincture will keep its potency for up to 18 months if stored properly.
